SYRIA SEEKS TO TURN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INTO DRIVER OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Syria is working to transform scientific research into a productive force that supports economic development and reconstruction, Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Marwan al-Halabi said.  Speaking after a meeting of the board of the General Commission for Biotechnology, al-Halabi said the government aims to restructure research centers and align their work more closely with national priorities.  The minister stressed the importance of linking research institutions with government ministries and productive sectors so that scientific results can be converted into practical applications and technologies that benefit the economy.  According to al-Halabi, priority fields include health and medicine, food security and agriculture, and pharmaceutical industries, areas where applied research could generate solutions with direct economic impact.  He also highlighted plans to modernize laboratories, support researchers and strengthen partnerships with both the public and private sectors, as well as expand scientific cooperation with international research institutions.  The reforms aim to ensure that scientific output moves beyond academic studies to become innovative technologies and projects that contribute to a knowledge-based economy in Syria.
