EU-FUNDED PROJECT FOR INDONESIAN SMALLHOLDER FARMERS
Fairtrade International and Indonesian NGO Bina Desa have launched a four-year, €1 million (approximately IDR19.5 billion) initiative titled “Transitioning Towards Green Resilience: Building Inclusive and Sustainable Agricultural Communities.” Running from November 2025 to October 2029, the program targets over 1,600 smallholder farmers—at least 30% of whom are women—across Java and Sulawesi. Funded by the EU’s Civil Society Organisations Thematic Programme, the project focuses on the coffee, cocoa, rice, and sugar sectors, aiming to equip farmers with climate-resilient and organic farming skills, promote gender equality, and enhance financial literacy. It also supports producer groups in obtaining organic certification and accessing higher-value markets. The initiative includes three key workstreams: capacity building for farmers, organizational strengthening through business coaching and sustainability grants, and policy engagement via consumer campaigns and producer-buyer matchmaking. It aligns with Indonesia’s “Just Green Transition” and Presidential Instruction No. 9/2025, which seeks to revitalize rural cooperatives and economies. The program also anticipates compliance with the EU’s deforestation-free regulation (EUDR). With rising global demand for traceable, high-quality agricultural products, the project aims to empower rural communities and foster inclusive, sustainable growth in Indonesia’s agri-food sector.Source: https://dailycoffeenews.com/2025/11/05/fairtrade-and-bina-desa-lead-eu-funded-smallholder-initiative-in-indonesia/ (ICE GIACARTA)
