Kazakh parliament passes amendments on intellectual propertyThe Senate, the upper house of Kazakhstan’s parliament, on Thursday approved the Law on Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts on Intellectual Property Matters.The bill had earlier been adopted by the Majilis, the lower house, and will now be submitted to the president for signature.According to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Legislation, Judicial System and Law Enforcement Agencies, the law aims to improve legislation in the field of intellectual property protection, create favorable conditions for the development of intellectual property, attract investment, and promote the creative economy.The amendments specify the exclusive rights of broadcasting and cable organizations to use their programs, including retransmission.The law also introduces an expedited trademark examination procedure. Under the new mechanism, a preliminary examination will be conducted within ten working days (previously one month), and a full examination within three months (previously seven months) from the date of application submission.In addition, the period for filing an opposition to trademark registration has been extended from one month to two, and the grounds for refusal of trademark registration have been clarified.Another key innovation is the creation of a unified digital platform for managing intellectual property rights. Its operation, maintenance, and technical support will be handled by the National Institute of Intellectual Property. (ICE ALMATY)
