GI TAG TO SWEETEN INDONESIA’S COCONUT SUGAR EXPORT TO EU

Indonesia’s Kulon Progo coconut sugar has received official Geographical Indication (GI) certification from the European Union, enhancing its prospects in the European market ahead of the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), set to take effect in January 2027. GIs recognize products with unique qualities tied to their origin, offering both consumer assurance and producer advantages. EU Ambassador to Indonesia, Denis Chaibi, emphasized that GI labels guarantee authenticity and help producers gain collective rights and market value, potentially increasing production, employment, and local economic growth. The GI certification is expected to raise the price of Kulon Progo coconut sugar significantly, with estimates suggesting an increase from IDR18,000 to IDR24,000 per unit. Indonesia already has EU-recognized GI tags for Gayo Arabica coffee, Bali Amed salt, and Muntok white pepper. While it remains unclear whether coconut sugar will benefit from immediate tariff elimination under CEPA, the agreement will gradually remove over 98% of tariffs, starting with 90.4% of Europe-bound Indonesian goods. With Indonesia-EU trade reaching US$30.4 billion last year and a US$4.4 billion surplus, the government anticipates trade volumes to more than double within five years of the deal’s implementation.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/gi-tag-to-sweeten-indonesias-coconut-sugar-export-to-eu (ICE GIACARTA)
