INDONESIA’S WTO WIN POISED TO BOOST STAINLESS STEEL EXPORTS BY 20% IN 2026
Indonesia’s recent victory over the European Union at the World Trade Organization is expected to significantly boost its stainless steel exports, potentially by 15%–20% in 2026, contingent on the EU lifting anti-dumping and countervailing duties. The removal of tariffs—previously as high as 21%—would make Indonesian cold-rolled stainless steel more competitive in the European market. While the EU retains the right to appeal, the decision is seen as a medium-term catalyst for increased capacity utilization in key industrial zones like Morowali, Konawe, and Bantaeng. In 2024, Indonesia’s stainless steel exports reached US$8.7 billion, with major markets in Asia; the WTO ruling could open doors to Europe’s premium segment. However, entering the European market comes with new challenges, particularly the upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in 2026, which imposes carbon costs on imports. Indonesia’s current emissions intensity of 2.3 tons of CO₂ per ton of steel exceeds Europe’s average of 1.2, risking price disadvantages. To capitalize on the WTO win, Indonesia must act swiftly in 2025 to align with EU sustainability standards—through emissions reporting, energy transition, and coordinated government-industry efforts. Establishing a WTO Compliance Task Force and negotiating CBAM recognition will be key, alongside industry moves to enhance green competitiveness and solidify Indonesia’s role in the global value chain.Source: https://industri.kontan.co.id/news/usai-menang-di-wto-ekspor-stainless-steel-indonesia-berpotensi-naik-20-pada-2026 (ICE GIACARTA)
