Kazakh prime minister orders tougher measures against shadow economyKazakhstan’s Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has instructed the Ministry of Finance, together with the Financial Monitoring Agency, to strengthen coordination in combating the shadow economy.“The Ministry of Finance, jointly with the Financial Monitoring Agency, must enhance coordination of efforts to curb the shadow economy,” Bektenov said at a government meeting on Tuesday.He also ordered the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development to establish a dedicated data processing center for the State Revenue Committee next year.“The Ministries of National Economy and Finance are to prepare an annual analytical report on measures to combat the shadow economy and submit relevant proposals,” Bektenov added.The prime minister recalled that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev had set a target to reduce the shadow economy’s share in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to 15% this year.According to the Finance Ministry, the shadow economy accounted for 16.7% of Kazakhstan’s GDP in 2024, down 0.9% from 2023.
