INDONESIA WINS WTO CASE, EU TOLD TO SCRAP STEEL TRADE BARRIERS

Indonesia has secured a major victory in its trade dispute with the European Union following a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling that found the EU’s countervailing and anti-dumping duties on Indonesian stainless steel products to be inconsistent with WTO regulations. Indonesia's Trade Minister, Budi Santoso, praised the decision as a milestone for Indonesia’s export sector, emphasizing its importance in maintaining and expanding market access in Europe. The WTO Panel’s final report on case DS616, released on October 2, 2025, concluded that Indonesia’s nickel export policies and bonded zone duty exemptions did not constitute unfair subsidies, and that financial support from Chinese entities did not qualify as prohibited transnational aid. The EU had imposed duties ranging from 9.3% to 21.4% on Indonesian stainless steel since 2021, prompting Indonesia to file a formal complaint with the WTO in early 2023. With the ruling now in Indonesia’s favor, the government is urging the EU to promptly revoke the contested duties and shift focus toward fostering mutually beneficial economic cooperation. Minister Santoso reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to monitoring the implementation of the decision to ensure fair treatment and improved access for its stainless steel exports in the European market.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/383953/indonesia-wins-wto-case-eu-told-to-scrap-steel-trade-barriers?utm_source=antaranews&utm_medium=mobile&utm_campaign=latest_category (ICE GIACARTA)
