DIGITAL DATA PAVES WAY FOR EXPORTS TO MAJOR MARKETS
Việt Nam’s Department of Forestry and Forest Protection has launched WoodID, an AI-powered mobile app capable of identifying over 260 wood species. Used by customs officers, forest rangers, and businesses, the tool enhances transparency and efficiency in wood supply chain management while supporting Việt Nam’s efforts to meet EU timber regulations under the VPA/FLEGT and the EUDR. Deputy Director Nguyễn Hữu Thiện said the app marks a major technological step toward a sustainable and responsible forestry sector. To strengthen export credibility, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính directed the development of a comprehensive traceability database covering forests, plantations, and agro-forestry-aquaculture products. Supported by the Netherlands’ IDH, a pilot is underway on 137,000ha of coffee, expanding to 462,000ha. Deputy Minister Hoàng Trung urged rapid digitalisation and training for local authorities to ensure smooth exports of key products — coffee, rubber, and timber. Việt Nam now has 8,000 plantation and 1,600 packing facility codes, and the government is finalising a national traceability system integrating supply chain data to uphold food safety, transparency, and sustainable export growth.
