POLAND HEAVILY INVESTS IN OFFSHORE WIND FARMS

In September, Prime Minister Donald Tusk posed in front of huge offshore wind turbines in the Baltic Sea, which are expected to provide Poland with up to several percent of its electricity. This is an unusual investment for Poland: it is proceeding without delays, efficiently and without political controversy. “In the coming decade, Poland will allocate trillions of zlotys to investments in energy, from offshore wind farms and nuclear power plants to the modernisation of the energy system”, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said last week during the “Energy from Poland Local First” forum. He announced that these funds are to be retained in Poland as much as possible and they are to power Polish enterprises. But while many countries are cutting back on expensive and complex offshore wind farm projects, Poland is preparing to make an important decision in December on entering the next stage of investment. Experts explain that it is not that Poland wants to be at the forefront of energy – unlike other countries, it simply has no choice. (ICE VARSAVIA)
