TANZANIA FINALIZES NATIONAL AI GUIDELINE, PLANS DIGITAL INSTITUTE DODOMA
The government has announced it is in the final stages of preparing a national guideline for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure safe and effective adoption of the rapidly evolving technology. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Mohammed Khamis Abdulla, revealed the plan during the opening of the 3rd Advanced AI Short Course Training at the University of Dodoma (UDOM). He also confirmed plans to establish a National Institute for Digital and AI Technologies in Nala, Dodoma, which will serve as a hub for innovation, training, and support for Tanzanians developing AI solutions. The AfriAI Lab at UDOM, launched in 2021 in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), is currently hosting a two-week training programme focused on machine learning, deep learning, responsible AI, and natural language processing. This year’s cohort selected 20 participants out of 214 applicants from across Africa, equipping them with the skills to tackle real-world challenges using AI, IoT, and blockchain technologies.Mr. Abdulla emphasized the importance of preparing Tanzania for global technological advancements, noting that graduates from previous cohorts have competed internationally, gaining recognition at events like the Tanzania Artificial Intelligence Forum 2025. The initiative aligns with Tanzania Development Vision 2050 (Dira 2050), which prioritizes human capital development through education, skills enhancement, and innovation. However, challenges remain, including high fertility rates, youth unemployment, and a mismatch between workforce skills and labour market needs. By promoting responsible AI use and establishing a strong digital ecosystem, the government aims to position Tanzania as a regional leader in technological innovation while strengthening its future workforce and economic resilience.
