UNDERSEA CABLES CUT IN THE RED SEA, DISRUPTING INTERNET ACCESS IN ASIA MIDDLEAST

Undersea internet cables in the Red Sea have been cut, disrupting connectivity across parts of the Middle East and Asia, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, India, and Pakistan, with users on Du and Etisalat reporting slower speeds. Microsoft confirmed higher latency in the region, while NetBlocks cited outages on the SMW4 and IMEWE systems near Jeddah, and Kuwait reported damage to the FALCON GCX cable. The cause remains unclear. Repairs could take weeks, raising fresh concerns about the security of global digital infrastructure, in an undersea cable segment that serves over 17% of global digital traffic connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
