Kazakhstan advances funding plan for Afghan rail project Kazakhstan has finalized a financing framework for a railway in Afghanistan and is now seeking investors for the construction, Deputy Minister of Transport Maksat Kaliakparov announced Tuesday."The 120-kilometer Turgundi-Herat line project has established its funding structure, with active efforts now focused on securing investment," Kaliakparov reported during a government meeting.He emphasized the railway's strategic value, stating it would open export and transit routes into Afghanistan with future potential for access to markets in Pakistan and India. The project timeline targets completion between 2026 and 2027.This development follows a memorandum of intent signed by the two nations in April, confirming Kazakhstan's commitment to the project. The country is ready to invest $500 million and plans to establish a dedicated logistics and transport company in Herat to support the initiative. (ICE ALMATY)
