KAZAKHSTAN-GOOGLE-DATA-BREACH
Massive Google data breach affects up to 2.5 billion Gmail accounts - Kazakh prosecutorsKazakhstan's Prosecutor General's Office warned Tuesday that a massive data breach at Google has compromised up to 2.5 billion Gmail accounts worldwide, though passwords remained secure. The breach, attributed to hacking group ShinyHunters, exposed contact information and company names through a social engineering attack where perpetrators impersonated IT support staff to trick a Google employee into authorizing malicious Salesforce Data Loader software. The leaked data enables sophisticated phishing and voice phishing attacks where criminals impersonate Google employees. Some users have already reported fraudulent calls appearing to originate from 650 area code numbers, the agency said."This incident confirms that even partially public data can become the basis for large-scale fraudulent schemes," the oversight body stated, urging users and organizations to strengthen security measures and regularly review account settings. The Prosecutor General's Office recommended immediately changing passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and implementing biometric or PIN protection. Users were advised to distrust unsolicited calls or emails purportedly from Google, noting that 9 out of 10 such communications are fraudulent. (ICE ALMATY)
