Kazakh PM calls for faster rollout of new nuclear power projects Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has called for accelerating work on new nuclear power generation projects, an Interfax-Kazakhstan correspondent reported.“A large-scale modernization of energy sources has begun in the country, with major projects underway involving investors, including the construction of the first nuclear power plant. We need to speed up preparations for additional nuclear power capacity,” Bektenov said at a government meeting on Tuesday.In his state-of-the-nation address on Monday, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the government to begin immediate planning for Kazakhstan’s second and third nuclear plants.Kazakhstan’s nuclear cluster project envisions the construction of three nuclear power plants. The government has said the second and third could be built with the participation of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).Russia’s Rosatom is slated to construct the first plant near Lake Balkhash. On August 8, 2025, Rosatom specialists began drilling the first exploratory well and collecting soil samples at the site near the village of Ulken in Almaty Region. (ICE ALMATY)
