EU DUE DILIGENCE DIRECTIVE TO HOLD BRANDS, BUYERS AND EXPORTERS ACCOUNTABLE:

Experts say the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), under the EU Due Diligence Act, will hold brands and Bangladesh's exporters accountable. Shahinur Rahman noted the CSDDD, effective in 2029, offers an opportunity to enforce due diligence, especially on fair pricing and labor rights. He stressed coordinated action to hold brands accountable, noting suppliers sometimes undercut prices. The EU Due Diligence Act (2024) holds large companies liable for human rights and environmental impacts across their supply chains. The CSDDD requires large EU and certain non-EU companies to address adverse impacts. Labour leaders at a BILS training program emphasized Bangladesh's need to prepare for CSDDD challenges. Naimul Ahsan Jewel warned that failure to protect labor rights could lead to lost export orders due to CSDDD non-compliance. (ICE NEW DELHI)
