KAZAKHSTAN-PRESIDENT-FOOD-SUPPORT
Lack of state support leaves Kazakh farmers uncompetitive - TokayevKazakhstan’s agricultural producers are struggling to compete due to insufficient government support compared to other member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said in his annual address to the nation on Monday."Our entrepreneurs do not receive state support to the extent provided in other EAEU countries. As a result, they are at a disadvantage and even have to surrender their own domestic market to competitors. This is especially evident in the dairy sector," Tokayev told a joint session of parliament. The president underscored the need to curb food imports."One hundred percent self-sufficiency is impossible and, perhaps, unnecessary. But what is happening in our market now is a shameful situation," he said.He also instructed the government to actively promote traditional national products on foreign markets."A concrete agricultural export plan is required, one that considers logistics, veterinary and phytosanitary standards, as well as competent marketing strategies. This should not fall solely on the Ministry of Agriculture – multiple agencies must work together, and coordination should be carried out at the government level," he said. (ICE ALMATY)
