KAZAKHSTAN-INFLATION-WARNING
Kazakh president warns of 'acute' inflation, urges government and central bank to cooperate President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev warned Monday that inflation in Kazakhstan has become "particularly acute" and called for closer coordination between the government and central bank to address the problem. In his annual address to the nation, Tokayev identified high inflation as the country's main economic challenge, noting that it "eats away at economic growth indicators and people's incomes.""Today the main problem is high inflation, which 'eats up' the growth of economic indicators and population incomes," Tokayev told a joint session of parliament. "There is no ready-made recipe for solving this problem - most countries face it, and it is universal. However, in our case, inflation has become particularly acute. We must break out of this macroeconomic vicious circle," Tokayev said. The president urged cooperation, stating that "the government and the National Bank should work as one team, taking into account the complexity of the situation and the common task. Now is not the time for tug-of-war." (ICE ALMATY)
