INDONESIA, EU TO SIGN CEPA AFTER DECADE OF NEGOTIATIONS
After a decade of negotiations, the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) is scheduled for signing on September 23, marking a major milestone in bilateral trade relations. While Indonesia expects to ratify the agreement between Q2 and Q4 of 2026, the EU’s approval process—requiring consent from all 27 member states—may take up to 12 months. If all procedures proceed smoothly, the pact could come into force by early 2027. Originally launched in 2016 under President Joko Widodo, the agreement’s completion was jointly announced in July 2024 by President Prabowo Subianto and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The IEU-CEPA is designed to eliminate tariffs on 98% of products and 99% of total import value, significantly boosting market access for Indonesian exports such as textiles and palm oil. Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto emphasized that the agreement aligns with Indonesia’s broader strategy to navigate global economic uncertainties and reduce tariff barriers, while also reinforcing domestic production and consumption. The pact is expected to unlock substantial trade and investment opportunities, positioning Indonesia as a more competitive player in the European market.Source: https://en.vietnamplus.vn/indonesia-eu-to-sign-cepa-after-decade-of-negotiations-post326111.vnp (ICE GIACARTA)
