GREEN LOGISTICS OPENS NEW DOORS FOR VIETNAMESE EXPORT BUSINESSES
HCM CITY — Green logistics is increasingly seen as a prerequisite for Vietnamese exporters to remain competitive amid stricter global environmental regulations, experts said at the seminar “Green Logistics – A Sustainable Development Trend for Vietnamese Export Businesses” in HCM City. Việt Nam has strong potential to be a logistics hub, with rapid sector growth, a strategic location, and improving infrastructure. Yet, logistics costs remain high due to fragmentation, heavy reliance on road transport, and environmental impacts. Adopting green logistics can cut costs, attract buyers, and boost competitiveness. Speakers highlighted upcoming EU rules such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (2026) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, which demand exporters prove low-carbon, sustainable supply chains. Compliance is increasingly a “trade passport” for maintaining access to key markets. Examples of green practices include Tân Cảng Cát Lái Port’s ePort system, which cut handling times, saved millions in fuel, and reduced CO₂, as well as AI-based route optimisation. The HCM City Logistics Association called for unified green logistics criteria, green finance incentives, carbon credit markets, and multimodal transport infrastructure. Training and awareness are also critical. Customs reforms such as automated clearance and “Smart Customs” by 2030 aim to further streamline trade while supporting sustainable practices.
