INDONESIA REDUCES 2025 DAIRY CATTLE IMPORT TARGET TO 150,000 HEAD

Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono announced that Indonesia’s live dairy cattle import target for 2025 has been revised down from 200,000 to 150,000 head due to delayed investment realization by foreign stakeholders, particularly from Vietnam and Brazil. These investors are expected to act only by late 2025, pending further clarity on land allocation and domestic conditions. The success of the dairy cattle import program is closely tied to the rollout of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) initiative, which aims to boost demand for fresh milk and beef. Although the government targets 1.3 million head of dairy cattle imports by 2029, only 9,700 head were imported between January and May 2025. Sudaryono remains optimistic that the 200,000 annual target will be met next year, once MBG participation expands beyond the current 20 million toward the year-end goal of 82.9 million. Despite the government's commitment to the import target, challenges persist. Maria Nunik Sumartini from the Ministry of Agriculture cited the economic downturn as a key factor limiting investor capacity, noting that the program relies entirely on private sector funding without government budget support. While the government has offered 1.5 million hectares of land for cattle farming, investor hesitation remains due to concerns about the investment climate. Sudaryono also warned that current import incentives are temporary and will be scaled back once the population target is achieved. Both officials emphasized that sustained growth in dairy cattle numbers hinges on private sector initiative and long-term confidence in Indonesia’s agricultural policies.Source: https://katadata.co.id/berita/industri/68b82442b06a9/target-impor-sapi-perah-2025-turun-jadi-150-ribu-ekor-dipengaruhi-program-mbg  (ICE GIACARTA)
