Kazakhstan boosts flaxseed exports by 80%, EU demand surges after tariff on RussiaKazakhstan exported 506,300 tonnes of flaxseed in the first 11 months of the 2024-2025 marketing year (September 2024 to July 2025), which is an 80% rise year-on-year, said Yevgeny Karabanov, head of the Analytics Department at the Grain Union.During this period, 67% of the 2024 harvest was shipped abroad, Karabanov wrote on his Telegram channel.Exports to the EU countries rose significantly to amount to 181,600 tonnes to Belgium (up 210%), 35,500 tonnes to Poland (up 120%), 11,800 tonnes to Germany (up 140%). Karabanov attributed the surge to the EU’s decision to raise the import tariff on Russian flaxseed to 20% in 2025.Sales to other markets also grew, including 40,600 tonnes to Afghanistan (up 20%) and 188,300 tonnes to China (up 70%).In July of this year, Kazakhstan exported 25.300 tonnes of flaxseed, down 9% from June.The Grain Union has left its forecast for flaxseed exports from Kazakhstan in the current marketing year (September 2024-August 2025) unchanged at 530,000 tonnes, Karabanov noted.This year, the sown area under flax in Kazakhstan expanded by 54% to 1.35 million hectares. The Grain Union forecasts that the 2025 harvest will yield about 1 million tonnes of flaxseed. (ICE ALMATY)
