ECONOMIST: ECONOMIC DISPARITY TRIGGERS PUBLIC OUTBURSTS OF ANGER
Aviliani, Senior Economist at Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef), argues that Indonesia's high and persistent economic disparity is the main driver of public outrage. Despite a 5% economic growth rate, the gap between the rich and poor is widening, with public incomes declining while officials' salaries and benefits increase. She highlights that low inflation is problematic if it is due to weakened consumer spending. The public perceives recent government actions—such as awarding honors and pursuing overseas investments—as disconnection from reality, especially when many face job losses. This perceived lack of focus on domestic issues, combined with poor communication about the state budget, has fueled public anxiety over potential tax hikes. Aviliani adds that public anger is aggravated by news of a salary increase for DPR members, who are seen as detached from the people's economic struggles. She concludes that these factors have left the public feeling unheard and disrespected, leading them to protest in the hopes of being listened to and given a platform for discussion.Source: https://money.kompas.com/read/2025/09/02/200200626/ekonom--kesenjangan-ekonomi-jadi-pemicu-ledakan-amarah-publik (ICE GIACARTA)
