INDONESIA TARGETS 2029 PRODUCTION START FOR US$21 BILLION MASELA GAS PROJECT

Indonesia’s Masela offshore gas block, located in the Arafura Sea and first discovered in 1998, is now slated to begin production in 2029 following the launch of its front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase. The US$20.94 billion project, led by Japan’s Inpex Masela Ltd (65% stake) alongside Indonesia’s Pertamina and Malaysia’s Petronas (35% combined), is expected to produce 9.5 million tons of LNG and 35,000 barrels of condensate per day. The development phase will generate approximately 12,600 jobs, with 850 roles during operations, and is anticipated to deliver substantial economic benefits to local communities. To ensure timely execution, the Indonesian government has committed to streamlining procurement and accelerating permitting through an integrated licensing team. The Masela Block’s 20-year concession extension comes after years of delays and mounting criticism, including Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia’s rebuke over Indonesia’s heavy reliance on energy imports despite its resource wealth. With FEED now in motion, the project marks a pivotal step toward reducing import dependency and boosting domestic energy production, though full operations remain at least four years away.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-targets-2029-production-start-for-21-billion-masela-gas-project (ICE GIACARTA)
