JAKARTA PROTESTS SEND INDONESIAN STOCKS DOWN 1.7% AMID INVESTOR JITTERS

Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) fell 1.73 percent to 7,815.34 amid escalating unrest in Jakarta, triggered by the death of a motorcycle taxi driver struck by a police armored vehicle during protests. The incident intensified public anger and heightened investor anxiety over political and security instability. Market analyst Hendra Wardana noted that both domestic and foreign investors tend to retreat quickly in response to perceived security risks, underscoring the market’s sensitivity to domestic turmoil. The protests, which have spread beyond Jakarta, have amplified political uncertainty, with the government’s response—advising lawmakers to work remotely—seen as distancing leadership from public concerns. This perception has further eroded investor confidence, as markets crave clear signals of stability. The sell-off was widespread, with 625 stocks declining and trading value reaching Rp 9.6 trillion ($583 million), reflecting the depth of investor unease.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/jakarta-protests-send-indonesian-stocks-down-17-amid-investor-jitters (ICE GIACARTA)
