7 GW NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS PLANNED IN INDONESIA’S ENERGY BLUEPRINT

Indonesia is advancing plans to develop nuclear power capacity of up to 7 GW by 2040, as outlined in the draft of its long-term electricity roadmap (RUPTL), according to PT PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo. The initiative builds on the 2025–2034 RUPTL, which already includes two 250 MW nuclear plants slated for South Sumatra and West Kalimantan by 2032. Darmawan emphasized that the broader 7 GW target will require strategic policymaking, institutional capacity building, and political support, positioning nuclear energy as a key solution to climate challenges and a driver of economic growth. Looking further ahead, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) envisions a total of 35 GW of nuclear capacity by 2060, potentially involving over 30 nuclear power units. To support this ambition, the ministry is coordinating with national agencies to establish a Nuclear Energy Program Implementation Organization (NEPIO). ESDM has also received proposals from five countries—including Canada and Russia—for nuclear plant development, though no technology design has been selected yet. The government continues to evaluate these offers as part of its broader energy transition strategy.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/5089/energy-and-resources/indonesia-plans-7-gw-nuclear-power-plants-as-part-of-long-term-energy-strategy  (ICE GIACARTA)
