HUNDREDS OF ITALIAN CINEMA INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS PRESSURE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL
Hundreds of Italian and international cinema professionals, including Marco Bellocchio, Alba Rohrwacher, Matteo Garrone, Audrey Diwan, and Charles Dance, have signed an open letter urging the Venice Film Festival to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The signatories, united under V4P (Venice4Palestine), called on the festival, its parent body the Biennale, and parallel sections to “be more courageous and clear in condemning the ongoing genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing across Palestine.” The letter denounces decades of persecution, occupation, and other alleged crimes against humanity, emphasizing the responsibility of cinema to bear witness and inspire action. The 82nd Venice Film Festival begins August 27, amid escalating violence and humanitarian disaster: over 61,000 deaths in Gaza, severe food insecurity affecting 500,000 people, and acute malnutrition among 132,000 children. The appeal follows a broader call by over 500 Italian cultural figures for a day of mobilization in support of Palestine during the festival on August 30. (ICE TORONTO)
