IRAQ SIGNS CONTRACT FOR FIFTH SUBMARINE CABLE
The Ministry of Communications has signed a contract with UAE-based Breeze Investments to land Iraq's fifth submarine cable at Al-Faw, in a ceremony attended by Minister of Communications Dr Hiyam Al-Yasiri.The project, carried out in cooperation with the State Company for Communications and Informatics, is a strategic step to strengthen Iraq's position as a regional and global hub for data and international communications traffic, linking through Iraq and Turkey to Europe.Minister Al-Yasiri highlighted the project's importance in enhancing the country's telecoms infrastructure, increasing internet capacity and speed, and reducing costs. She noted that global companies are increasingly attracted to Iraq's shorter terrestrial corridor, and confirmed that Breeze has also been authorised to establish a terrestrial transit network under the name "World Link".The Minister added that the project will boost state revenues, strengthen economic stability, and carry geopolitical value. With five submarine cables now in place, and additional transit networks under implementation or contract, Iraq is positioning itself as a competitive alternative to traditional maritime routes.
