ALBERTA SEEKS MEXICO ENERGY DEAL AS TRUMP THREATENS TRADE
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith visited Mexico to strengthen energy ties as trade tensions with the U.S. escalate.Smith said Alberta can now ship oil and gas directly to Mexico through new Pacific Ocean export terminals. The move comes as President Donald Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods and 10% on Canadian energy.“It just makes sense to see if there’s ways we can strengthen the relationship between Mexico and Canada,” Smith said Monday in Mexico City. The premier met with officials from Mexico’s state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos and other industry representatives. She promoted Alberta companies TC Energy and ATCO during the two-day trip. The tariff threats are pushing Canada’s largest oil producer to break its dependence on the U.S. Alberta has historically relied heavily on American markets for energy exports. The new Pacific export facilities give Canadian energy companies alternative routes to international markets. This could reduce industry vulnerability to U.S. trade policy changes.Mexico represents Canada’s second-largest trading partner in Latin America. Strengthening energy partnerships could create new revenue streams for Alberta-based companies facing 10% tariffs on crude oil and natural gas products when exporting to the U.S.The diversification strategy aims to shield Canadian energy firms from future trade disruptions with their largest customer.
