INDONESIA MAKES PLASTIC RECYCLING MANDATORY FOR PRODUCERS

Indonesia is making its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme mandatory for manufacturers using plastic packaging, shifting from a previously voluntary approach. This move, part of the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan, aims to meet national waste management targets by 2029. Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stressed that producers must take greater responsibility for plastic waste, especially single-use items. The regulation follows the country’s ban on plastic scrap imports starting January 1, 2025. The mandatory EPR is expected to significantly affect sectors like food and beverage, retail, manufacturing, cosmetics, and services. Companies will be required to create recycling plans and submit regular reports. Additionally, the government is promoting waste-to-energy projects in high-waste areas, though these are considered a last resort due to cost and complexity. Experts believe the policy will level the playing field among businesses, but challenges remain due to the lack of coordination in Indonesia’s recycling infrastructure.Source: https://en.vietnamplus.vn/indonesia-makes-plastic-recycling-mandatory-for-producers-post324915.vnp (ICE GIACARTA)
