E-SCOOTERS ENJOY HIGHER DEMAND ON GOVERNMENT PLANSVIETNAM’S ELECTRIC SCOOTER MAR

Vietnam’s electric scooter market is accelerating as government policies push for transport electrification. Hà Nội plans to ban petrol motorbikes within Ring Road 1 from July 2026, while HCM City will phase out 400,000 petrol ride-hailing bikes starting early 2026. With 77 million motorbikes registered nationwide, demand for alternatives is set to soar. Electric models are already widely available, priced between VNĐ18–25 million plus registration. Consumers choose between cheaper lead-acid batteries and more durable lithium options. The market began with Chinese brands in 2013, but VinFast’s entry in 2018 reshaped the sector. By 2020, VinFast dominated with a 43.4% share, ahead of Pega, Dibao, Yadea, and Anbico. Industry experts stress that price, quality, and design will ultimately decide winners. Dr Nguyễn Sơn of RMIT highlights opportunities in smart systems, advanced batteries, and support services. Honda and Yamaha are preparing to compete, with Honda exploring rentals and Yamaha introducing its NEO’s scooter in late 2022. Former lawmaker Nguyễn Ngọc Bảo emphasized that policies aim at sustainability, not favoritism, and that foreign giants have had ample time to adapt. In H1 2025, Việt Nam’s two-wheeler market grew 19% year-on-year, with VinFast’s electric sales surging 501%, maintaining leadership in the fast-growing segment. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
