NORTH AMERICA HEATING WOOD PELLET MARKET UPDATE: 2Q 2025
In late May, the Province of Ontario announced it will invest millions in utilizing biomass derived from post-harvest forest residues. With forestry by-products showing potential in many novel applications, the provincial government plans to support the development of projects that include renewable natural gas, bioplastics, hydrogen fuels, food additives, building materials, and other uses.Ontario’s Forest Biomass Program has directed over $30 million in targeted investments to more than 40 projects since 2023. This latest tranche of funding will provide $11.4 million to four different projects to encourage better utilization of forest waste residuals. Hornepayne Power Inc. will receive $7.5 million to increase energy production in Northeastern Ontario by modernizing and upgrading power generation equipment, including a feasibility study regarding on-site green hydrogen production.Nearly $3 million will go to GreenFirst Forest Products to upgrade the company’s biomass cogeneration plant, with an additional $130,000 earmarked to investigate on-site production of torrefied wood pellets. Another $500,000 will help Circular Carbon Canada study northeast sawmills as potential sites for pyrolysis plants, and Wikwemikong Development Commission will receive $200,000 to support the development of a combined wood pellet and biocoal facility. The funding is part of a broader aim by government to protect workers and their jobs in the forest industry. (ICE TORONTO)
