COUNTRY SEES RECORD $4.77B EXPORTS IN JULY, UP NEARLY 25% YOY
Bangladesh's exports reached a record high of $4.77 billion in July 2023, a 24.9% increase year-on-year, according to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). This marks the highest monthly export figure the country has ever seen. Although exports briefly surpassed $5 billion in January 2024, that figure was later revised down to $4.12 billion. The July surge was attributed to a combination of factors, including post-Eid shipment pressure, uncertainty over US tariffs, and a low base effect from last year's political unrest, which caused factory closures. Shovon Islam, managing director of Sparrow Group, noted that uncertainty over US tariffs had buyers pushing for earlier shipments. The US remains Bangladesh's largest export market, accounting for about $8.4 billion a year. BKMEA executive president Fazlee Shamim Ehsan emphasized that the previous year’s unrest contributed to the apparent growth, as many factories were closed in July 2022, leading to lower exports at that time. Although some exporters said orders were currently slow, they expect an increase in the coming months. BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem cautioned against accepting discounted orders to avoid losses. In addition to apparel, other sectors like frozen fish, leather products, and agricultural goods showed significant growth, with overall exports up nearly 43% compared to June 2025 (ICE NEW DELHI)
