INDONESIA EYES GLOBAL LEADERSHIP IN EV BATTERY INDUSTRY WITH US$8 BLN INVESTMENT

Indonesia is intensifying efforts to become a global leader in the electric vehicle (EV) industry by developing a fully integrated EV battery ecosystem, supported by a massive 100 GW solar power project. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia announced that the US$8 billion joint venture between Huayou, Antam, and Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) is set to be completed by 2027, marking a major milestone in the country’s energy transition. This initiative aligns with Indonesia’s net zero emissions target by 2060 and President Prabowo Subianto’s push for industrial downstreaming and renewable energy adoption. The government is prioritizing the use of domestically sourced components and renewable energy in EV battery production, aiming to shift from lithium-based to nickel-based technologies to capitalize on Indonesia’s abundant nickel reserves. Deputy Minister Kartika Wirjoatmodjo emphasized the role of state-owned enterprises in driving this transition, including partnerships with global players like CATL and Huayou. Regulatory incentives are being introduced to support manufacturers in adopting nickel-based systems, reinforcing Indonesia’s ambition to become a key player in the global EV supply chain and a hub for green technology manufacturing.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4927/energy-and-resources/indonesia-eyes-global-leadership-in-ev-battery-industry-with-us-8-b-investment (ICE GIACARTA)
