ALBERTA, DENMARK SIGN CARBON CAPTURE TECHNOLOGY AGREEMENT
Alberta Innovates and the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on carbon capture, utilization and storage technology.The four-year agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between Alberta and Denmark aimed at advancing CCUS development and deployment while reducing costs.Mike Mahon, chief executive officer of Alberta Innovates, said demand for CCUS technology is growing and Alberta’s expertise positions the province to build international partnerships. The collaboration will involve sharing technical knowledge and expertise between the two jurisdictions.The partnership supports Alberta Innovates’ efforts to advance CCUS adoption through technology diversification.Bryan Helfenbaum, vice-president of clean energy at Alberta Innovates, said reducing the cost of emissions reduction technology is essential for Canada’s energy industry to remain competitive globally. He noted CCUS technology plays a significant role in that objective.Denmark considers CCUS technology critical to its greenhouse gas reduction strategy.Danish Ambassador to Canada Nikolaj Harris said CCUS is an important tool in Denmark’s goal of achieving 70 per cent emissions reduction by 2030 and net-zero by 2050. He expressed optimism about the partnership with Alberta Innovates.Under the memorandum, representatives from Alberta and Denmark will meet two to three times annually. The meetings will bring together experts from industry, government and academia to discuss advancing the technology. (ICE TORONTO)
