LG CHEM AND ITALY'S ENI BREAK GROUND ON HVO PLANT IN SEOSAN

LG Chem announced on the 4th that its subsidiary LG E-Biorefining has begun construction on an HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) plant in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons and is scheduled for construction by 2027. HVO is an eco-friendly product made by adding hydrogen to renewable vegetable oils, such as waste cooking oil. It significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and resists freezing even at low temperatures, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), biodiesel, and bio-naphtha. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is used as aircraft fuel, and bio-naphtha is the main raw material for ethylene. LG Chem will expand the proportion of BCB (Bio Circular Balanced) products that have acquired global eco-friendly certification (ISCC PLUS), such as high-value-added synthetic resin (ABS) for home appliances and automobiles, high-elasticity resin (EVA) for sporting goods, and superabsorbent resin (SAP) for hygiene products, through the introduction of bio naphtha. LGE Biorefining is a joint venture established in December of last year by LG Chem and Enilive, a subsidiary of the Italian energy company Eni. Eni operates a 2 million tonne HVO facility in Italy and has a diverse global supply chain of eco-friendly raw materials. “This will be an opportunity to realize our strategy of expanding our sustainable product range and confirm our leadership in the production of eco-friendly fuels,” said Stefano Ballista, CEO of Enilive. LG Chem Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol said, “We will continue to pursue technological innovation and commercialization in the fields of eco-friendly fuels and bio-materials to strengthen our global competitiveness and respond in a timely manner to customer demand.”   (ICE SEOUL)
