HIGH RICE PRICES, EDUCATION COSTS PUSH UP INFLATION TO 2.37 PERCENT IN JULY
he consumer price index (CPI) rose 2.37 percent year-on-year (yoy) in July, the steepest increase recorded since June last year, driven primarily by higher rice prices and education costs, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data released on Friday. The figure also represents an increase from the 1.87 percent growth recorded in June and 2.13 percent inflation posted in July 2024. According to Arief Prasetyo Adi, head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), unhulled rice production dropped to just 2.5 million tonnes in June-July, or half the March-April output, leading to a spike in the prices of both unprocessed and milled rice. Beyond the rise in food prices, the start of the new school year also drove up inflation in July, with education-related expenses playing a notable role. Pudji Ismartini, BPS deputy for distribution and services, said education costs grew 0.82 percent month-on-month and contributed 0.05 percentage points to overall inflation, while warning the trend could persist in coming months.Source : https://www.thejakartapost.com/business/2025/08/01/high-rice-prices-education-costs-push-up-inflation-to-2-37-percent-in-july.html (ICE GIACARTA)
