GOOGLE’S PARTNERS WITH ITALY'S ENERGY DOME FOR LDES TECHNOLOGY

The partnership includes a commercial agreement between the two and an investment in Energy Dome from Google. The offer is enticing for Google as Energy Dome’s carbon-free battery technology plays neatly into Google’s overarching goal of operating without carbon around the clock by 2030. Energy Dome’s technology is already available and capable of scaling because it’s a combination of existing processes. It works with the help of a closed-loop cycle. It pulls CO2 from a dome-shaped holder and converts it between gas and liquid phases. As the carbon evaporates and expands, energy is generated without any CO2 emissions. The machinery can store energy anywhere between eight to 24 hours. Energy Dome was founded in 2019 and is an energy tech startup headquartered in Milan, Italy. It sees its technology as a better solution for lithium batteries, which are the current vessels for storing CO2 energy. According to the company, CO2 batteries have slightly less round-trip efficiency but no degradation in either capacity or performance over time, compared to lithium batteries’ high degradation rate. These batteries also last for up to three decades, compared to lithium’s 12 years.Another benefit is that it’s possible to construct these CO2 batteries anywhere, making it easy for Google and other interested parties to create and use them regardless of location. Long Duration Energy StorageLong duration energy storage (LDES) is one solution for reducing carbon emissions and reaching carbon neutrality. Aside from investing in and using Energy Dome, the company has backed this technology in other ways. It joined the board of LDES Council alongside Microsoft, Shell, and other large corporations, and it’s funneled money and support into geothermal projects, all in hopes of reaching net-zero carbon in just under five years.
