HANOI FACES URGENT NEED FOR EV CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE AHEAD OF FOSSIL FUEL MOTO

A consortium including G42 Technology, FPT Corporation, VinaCapital, and Viet Thai Investment Group has proposed a $2 billion hyperscale data centre in Ho Chi Minh City. Designed to support AI development and cloud services across Asia, the centre aims to position the city as a leading regional tech hub. The project promises major socioeconomic benefits such as GDP growth, increased foreign investment, thousands of high-quality jobs, and IT workforce development. However, investors face legal and regulatory obstacles, especially regarding Vietnam’s data regulations, which conflict with global standards. These issues—like data localisation and monitoring requirements—may hinder expansion and deter international clients. To address this, the city has urged the prime minister to consider special regulatory mechanisms, similar to Singapore’s policies, and prioritize cloud over on-premises infrastructure for improved security and compliance. G42, backed by the UAE's sovereign fund and Microsoft, already operates 24 data centres and plans to expand to 500MW capacity globally. In Vietnam, G42 intends to boost AI use and public service quality through national initiatives. Vietnam is increasingly attractive to global data centre investors due to competitive costs, strategic location, and growing renewable energy interest. To sustain this momentum, experts call for improved digital infrastructure, stable power supply, and supportive policy frameworks. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
