PARLIAMENT ADOPTS BANKING RESOLUTION LAW

Parliament, meeting on Thursday, adopted the banking resolution law during a plenary session expected to be decisive for the near future of the negotiations initiated by Lebanon for a program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).  The law, which had spent several weeks in subcommittee discussions before being validated by the Finance Committee and then submitted to the joint committees, was one of the five bills and proposals that the MPs had planned to consider on Thursday. Meeting since 11 a.m., it was only around 7:30 p.m., during the evening session, that the MPs agreed on a version of the law that essentially incorporated the version adopted by the Finance Committee earlier this week, according to initial information that has leaked.  This law aims to define the framework for the recovery of a sector where the majority of establishments have been technically bankrupt since the start of the crisis that began at the end of 2019.  MPs adopted amendments to the law on the liberalization of non-residential rents and a law modifying the granting of allowances to public school principals. A proposal to relax regulations for pharmacists was referred to committee, while consideration of the bill on the organization of the judiciary was postponed until the evening session at the request of the prime minister.
