QUANTITY OF GOODS AT PORT OF BEIRUT INCREASED BY 16% YEAR-ON-YEAR IN 5M 2025

According to the latest statistics released by the Port of Beirut (PoB), the quantity of goods increased by 15.8% year-on-year, reaching 2,549.8 thousand tons in the first five months (5M) of 2025, up from 2,202.4 thousand tons in 5M 2024. This increase follows a year-on-year expansion in tons of goods at PoB of 4.6% year-on-year between 5M 2023 and 5M 2024.  Concurrently, the number of containers saw a yearly increase of 25.0%, totaling 260,331 containers in 5M 2025, compared to 208,321 containers in the same period of the previous year. This increase follows a year-on-year decrease in the number of containers entering PoB of 5.1% year-on-year between 5M 2023 and 5M 2024, as per data from PoB.  The quantity of goods that entered PoB in 5M 2025 was the highest recorded during the period since the same period of 2019. Additionally, the number of containers that entered PoB in 5M 2025 was the highest recorded since the same period of 2019.  On the other hand, the number of ships decreased over the period, reaching 584 ships in 5M 2025, compared to 632 ships in 5M 2024, showing a year-on-year contraction of 7.6%. This decrease follows a year-on-year jump in the number of ships entering PoB of 23.2% year-on-year between 5M 2023 and 5M 2024.  Transshipments at PoB recorded 69,763 containers in 5M 2025, showing a year-on-year drop of 19.5% down from 86,689 containers in 5M 2024. This drop follows another year-on-year decrease in the number of transshipments entering PoB of 11.1% year-on-year between 5M 2023 and 5M 2024.  Looking at the recovery rate in the quantity of goods imported through PoB during the first five months of 2025 against the same period of 2019, a rate of 88.5% is noted. This recovery rate is 12.1 percentage points higher than the one noted in 5M 2024 and stands as the highest recorded recovery rate since the start of the crisis. This increase follows a year-on-year increase in the recovery rate of 3.3 percentage points between 5M 2023 and 5M 2024, as per data from PoB.  Looking at the Port of Beirut’s performance in May 2025, the quantity of goods reported an increase of 8.3% year-on-year, reaching 586.3 thousand tons for the month, up from 541.4 thousand tons in the same month of the year prior.  The number of containers noted a year-on-year expansion of 32.0%, recording 66,741 containers in May 2025, up from 50,578 containers in May 2024, according to data from PoB.  On the other hand, transshipments through PoB noted a year-on-year drop of 36.5% between May 2024 and May 2025, reaching 11,916 containers in the latter down from 18,771 containers in the former.  In parallel, the number of ships recorded at PoB during May 2025 reached 119 ships, marking a year-on-year increase of 1.7%, up from 117 ships in the same month of the previous year.
