SUSTAINABILITY WAVE POWERING GREEN DATA CENTRE GROWTH

Vietnam’s green data centre market is set for strong growth, projected to expand at 15.3% annually from 2025 to 2033, according to IMARC Group. This boom is driven by government climate targets, notably the Power Development Plan VIII aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, and the upcoming Data Centre Decree, which may impose strict power usage standards. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments are also reshaping the landscape. Multinational corporations now require renewable energy use to meet Scope 3 emissions targets, pushing data centre operators to adopt direct power purchase agreements (PPAs) and install on-site solar systems. Vietnam’s position as a digital hub is drawing significant investment from hyperscale cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft, and Google, which have their own aggressive decarbonisation goals. This demand fuels the development of greenfield data centres using renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies, such as indirect evaporative cooling. Beyond compliance, cost advantages are emerging. Renewable energy in Vietnam is now often cheaper than grid power, and rising retail prices and grid reliability concerns are accelerating the adoption of on-site solar and battery storage. Altogether, green data centres are evolving from premium to essential infrastructure—economically viable, environmentally necessary, and central to Vietnam’s sustainable digital future.
