VIỆT NAM ACCELERATES ITS ENERGY TRANSITION

Việt Nam is advancing its energy transition to meet its net-zero emissions target by 2050, amid rising energy demand and growing environmental concerns. According to Dr Nguyễn Anh Tuấn of the Việt Nam Energy Association, the country’s Power Development Plan VIII outlines a roadmap prioritising solar and wind power expansion while cutting coal reliance. Renewables now contribute around 48% of electricity output, a notable milestone, though integration challenges—like grid stability and system costs—remain. Key policy needs include transitioning from feed-in tariffs to auctions, offering price incentives, and investing in grid infrastructure, human resources, and technology R&D. Forecasting capabilities and support for domestic equipment manufacturing are also essential, as Việt Nam currently relies heavily on imports for solar and wind tech. From a business perspective, Rạng Đông Light Source & Vacuum Flask JSC exemplifies private sector efforts in the green shift. The company has pursued digital and green transformation since 2020, focusing on AI- and IoT-based smart lighting, solar-powered systems, and high-efficiency LED products. They also invest in R&D and talent development to overcome technology and skills shortages. However, challenges persist: lack of national standards for green products, limited access to affordable finance, and a shortage of skilled professionals. Rạng Đông urges the government to provide preferential loans (3–5% interest) to ease the financial burden of green investments. Overall, Việt Nam’s energy transition requires synchronized policy, industry innovation, and financial support to ensure a sustainable and inclusive green future. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
