BANANA EXPORTS POISED TO REACH $4 BILLION IN NEAR FUTURE

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s banana industry is emerging as a key growth driver in agriculture, with export potential projected to reach US$4 billion, according to Unifarm Chairman Phạm Quốc Liêm. In 2024, exports totaled $380 million, placing Việt Nam among the world’s top 10 banana exporters. Banana cultivation spans 161,000 hectares, and the crop is gaining attention amid challenges in durian and dragon fruit exports. Vietnamese bananas are now exported to China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, the EU, and the US. To meet global demand, Unifarm is implementing unified production standards, emphasizing traceability and sustainability. Experts highlight the need for restructuring the value chain, developing processing industries, and improving logistics and brand identity. Processed banana products remain underdeveloped, and industry leaders call for supportive policies in technology, finance, and waste utilization. The Ministry is also proposing a self-declaration system for banana varieties to improve efficiency and legal accountability in seed quality management. (ICE HO CHI MINH CITY)
