INDONESIA PROPOSES GLOBAL PALM OIL STANDARDS TO COUNTER EU DEFORESTATION RULE
Indonesia is spearheading an effort to establish a global standard for palm oil management and trade, in direct response to the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno announced the plan at a bioenergy seminar in Jakarta, emphasizing the need for benchmarks independent of EU criteria. The initiative will engage platforms like BRICS, the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), and the UN's FAO, aiming to bolster sustainable trade practices and protect smallholder farmers who are disproportionately affected by EUDR's requirements. Discussions with FAO are scheduled to begin by the end of July. Indonesia’s move signals a strategic shift from compliance to leadership in global vegetable oil standards. The EUDR mandates strict traceability to ensure imports are not tied to deforestation, but many small-scale producers in Indonesia lack the infrastructure to meet such demands—posing risks to sectors like palm oil, cocoa, rubber, and coffee. By collaborating with emerging economies and international organizations, Indonesia intends to counter regulatory barriers and champion equitable trade rules that reflect its status as a top global exporter.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4778/policy-and-governance/indonesia-pushes-for-global-palm-oil-standards-to-counter-eu-deforestation-law (ICE GIACARTA)
