ID FOOD ACCELERATES SUGAR, SALT SELF-SUFFICIENCY TO REDUCE IMPORTS STARTING 2026
State-owned enterprise ID Food is accelerating efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar and salt as part of Indonesia’s national food sovereignty program. By 2026, the company plans to expand sugarcane plantations by 500 hectares and build a new sugar mill with a capacity of 6,000 TCD to reduce reliance on the 200,000 tons of sugar currently imported annually. For salt, the self-sufficiency target has been moved up to 2027, with modernization of processing plants using SWRO and MVR technologies and development of new production areas in East Nusa Tenggara. These initiatives aim to boost domestic output and reduce Indonesia’s dependence on the 3 million tons of salt it imports each year. Beyond production, ID Food is enhancing its role in seed development through PT Sang Hyang Seri and supporting food distribution and price stabilization in collaboration with Bulog. The company is also backing the government’s free nutritious meal program by promoting domestic livestock production, particularly for milk and meat, which are still heavily imported. Cross-sector partnerships with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Ministry of Agriculture are being strengthened to build a resilient and equitable food system. Additionally, ID Food plans to launch the “Red-and-White Cooperative” to empower producers and improve supply chain dynamics, reinforcing its mission to ensure food availability and affordability nationwide.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4781/national-resilience/id-food-accelerates-sugar-salt-self-sufficiency-to-reduce-imports-starting-2026 (ICE GIACARTA)
