INDONESIA AND BRICS HOLD THE KEY TO GLOBAL ENERGY TRANSITION: REPORT
A new report by the Net Zero Policy Lab at Johns Hopkins University emphasizes that the global ambition to triple renewable energy by 2030, as agreed at COP28, hinges significantly on energy transition efforts within BRICS countries, including Indonesia. The report, titled “BRICS Going Green,” highlights that while clean energy investments in the BRICS bloc have surpassed fossil fuels—driven by Brazil, China, and India—internal policy disagreements and inadequate overall investment remain major hurdles. With BRICS accounting for over half of global carbon emissions, failure to transition swiftly could derail global climate goals and pose economic risks to member nations. Clean technologies are becoming essential drivers of economic growth, contributing roughly 10% of global GDP growth in the past year. Indonesia has made notable advancements in green industrialization, such as a US$10 billion green industrial zone partnership with Singapore and plans for a massive EV battery plant. However, concerns persist due to the country's continued coal dependency—still about 60% of its electricity mix—and limited investment in innovation and education. The report urges BRICS nations to lead the green shift through industrial and technological cooperation, financial collaboration, and inclusive governance. For Indonesia, specific policy recommendations include reforming its biofuel supply chains to prevent environmental damage and setting stronger mandates and infrastructure for biofuel production, supported by coordinated trade, financial, and technological strategies.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4765/geopolitics-and-diplomacy/indonesia-and-brics-hold-the-key-to-global-energy-transition-report (ICE GIACARTA)
