Kazakhstan to restrict operation of overaged railcarsKazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport has proposed restrictions on the use of railcars with extended service life as part of efforts to modernize the country’s rolling stock, the government’s press service announced Thursday."To encourage fleet renewal, the Transport Ministry has proposed restrictions on operating railcars with extended service life. The ministry has drafted a necessary regulatory document, which is undergoing approval procedures," the press service said in a statement.On Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin chaired a meeting of the Economic Growth Task Force."The Deputy Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of National Economy to expedite procedural matters for the swift adoption of the new regulations," the government press service added.Kazakhstan’s railway sector accounts for 13% of the nation’s mechanical engineering output. In 2024, domestic manufacturers produced 125 locomotives and over 2,700 railcars valued at 599.3 billion tenge. The industry currently comprises five production facilities located in Astana, Petropavlovsk, Ekibastuz and Atyrau. (ICE ALMATY)
