Prime Minister oversees water allocation as southern regions face dry growing seasonPrime Minister Olzhas Bektenov led a meeting to address the growing season progress and irrigation water supply in Kazakhstan’s southern regions, which are experiencing below-average precipitation. The government's press service reported that reservoirs currently hold 19.2 billion cubic meters of water, with 98% of irrigation water allocated to five key southern regions: Zhetisu, Almaty, Zhambyl, Turkestan, and Kyzylorda, covering 1.2 million hectares.Authorities plan to supply 10.1 billion cubic meters of water this season. As of July 15, 7 billion cubic meters have been delivered, with 3.1 billion cubic meters remaining for distribution before the season concludes.Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, has assured stable water supplies for the Almaty and Zhetysu regions. In the Zhambyl region, the growing season is progressing as planned, while water management in the Shu-Talas basin remains stable under ongoing monitoring. Authorities aim to allocate 625 million cubic meters of water to the Shu and Talas river basins by September 2025.The Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions began the growing season 20 days earlier than usual, leading to a 50% increase in early-stage water use due to low soil moisture. Prime Minister Bektenov stressed the need for strict oversight of water resources and instructed the Turkestan regional authorities to ensure an uninterrupted water supply for residents in advance.
