GOVT ROLLS OUT A-CHALLAN SYSTEM

The government has launched a new system for the direct deposit of customs duties and taxes into the treasury through automated challans (a-Challan), effective at the start of the fiscal year. This initiative, developed by the Finance Division and the National Board of Revenue (NBR), allows importers, exporters, and C&F agents to deposit customs-related payments online or offline at any time, enhancing financial efficiency. The a-Challan system, integrated with the NBR's Asycuda World System, allows for instant deposit of duties, enabling quicker clearance of goods. Following a training program for stakeholders at Chattogram Customs House, the system went live on July 3, with over Tk 1.30 billion in duties deposited on the first day. Payment options include internet banking, debit/credit cards, and mobile financial services like bKash and Rocket. Transactions are supported at 11,700 branches of 61 banks, and system-generated receipt numbers facilitate the clearance of goods. The pilot program began in April at ICD Kamalapur, expanding first to Pangaon, and will fully roll out to Dhaka Customs House and others by July 7. This system aims to improve transparency and efficiency in revenue collection, contributing to better fiscal discipline for the government. (ICE NEW DELHI)
