INDONESIA'S OIL & GAS SECTOR RAMPS UP DRILLING TO BOLSTER ENERGY SECURITY

Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas sector is gaining strong traction, with development drilling rising by 20% year-on-year to 337 wells as of May 2025. The surge has directly contributed to exceeding oil lifting targets, prompting the government and Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) to push for further acceleration to meet the ambitious goal of 993 wells this year. Despite past fluctuations, drilling activity has steadily rebounded since 2017, reflecting sustained resilience even during global disruptions like COVID-19. As geopolitical tensions and volatile oil prices intensify concerns over energy security, lawmakers are urging greater domestic production and infrastructure upgrades. A member of Energy Commission XII of the House of Representatives (DPR) Jalal Abdul Nasir highlighted Indonesia’s vulnerability to global market shifts and called for urgent measures to reduce import dependence, including boosting lifting targets and advancing refinery development. He framed the situation as a strategic turning point to fast-track national energy transformation.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/4740/energy-and-resources/oil-gas-sector-sees-surge-in-development-drilling-amid-energy-security-push  (ICE GIACARTA)
